Waukesha County 4-H Horse Project Members, Leaders and Parents: |
|
Monday, 06 April 2009 |
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to many fine folks for coordinating three wonderful, educational clinic events for the 4-H youth of Waukesha County. Thank you to Kathy Hanson of Halls Saddlery for inviting our 4-Hers to their proper show attire event. Thank you to Mr. Steve Secosh, WC4-HHA Board member/webmaster for coordinating and facilitating the tack cleaning clinic. And, thank you to the WC4-HHA Youth Board for coordinating and facilitating the show preparation clinic, which was so graciously hosted by Jamee Bornstein of The Horse Quarters in East Troy. We had approximately 50 4-H members at both the tack cleaning and show prep clinics which was excellent attendance! For those 4-Hers that still need to fulfill your clinic attendance requirements, your next opportunity is at the Midwest Horse Fair at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI (April 17-19, 2009) In order for this event to count as a WC4-HHA approved clinic, 4-Hers must sign in at the Silver Oaks Trailer Sales booth in the outdoor trailer corral area at the Midwest Horse Fair. 4-Her’s MUST sign the attendance sheet themselves (no parents or friends signing them in). If you do not sign the attendance sheet during the three day run of the event, you will not be able to count your attendance at the MHF toward your WC4-HHA clinic requirements. NO EXCEPTIONS! Another reminder: If you plan on camping at the Waukesha County Fair, you will need to attend the Overnight Stay/Camping meeting for all livestock exhibitors on April 27th, 2009 at 6:30 at the North Hall of the Forum Building. Also, for clarification purposes, there has been some lingering confusion regarding the trailer loading policy on the Sunday of County Fair. ALL LIVESTOCK, regardless of whether an animal is going to market or not, will not be allowed to be removed from the fairgrounds until 7pm. Although it may have appeared that market animals were allowed to leave prior to 7pm, this has not been the past practice and will not be the practice for this year either. Therefore, all privately owned rigs (truck and trailers) must remain idle until 7pm. The ONLY exception to this guideline is that there may be COMMERCIAL haulers staging the big rigs prior to 7pm near the livestock barns (dairy, swine, beef, sheep). Although there may be movement and activity preparing the rigs to receive market animals, market animals will not be allowed to exit the fairgrounds prior to 7pm, just like the other non-market animals which includes the horses. Please don’t let the potential distraction of activity of the staging COMMERCIAL haulers distract from the fact that the 7pm exit time policy continues to be in place. I hope this is explanation will be satisfactory in alleviating some of the confusion that existed after the mandatory meeting. Please continue to check the horse project website. Updates are made on a regular basis. Most recent updates include member service hour rosters for the upcoming show season. Finally, please don’t forget to submit your project registration form and County Fair stall reservation form by the May 31st deadline. We look forward to seeing you at the schooling show on April 25, 2009! Brenda Wolfe – WC4-HHA President |

Our next county level clinic will be on Sunday, April 5th and will focus on different grooming related activities that will prepare your horse/pony for the show ring. This clinic will be primary faciliated by experienced, knowledgeable senior 4-H youth board members, with some assistance from parents and helpful 4-H friends. This clinic is geared toward 4-H exhibitors in their 1st of 2nd year of showing, horseless horse members or those more experienced members looking for those finishing touches that will take their grooming techniques to the next level. Topics that will be covered, but not limited to: Basic clipping, More complicated clipping involved ears, Braiding (stock type, running braid and saddleseat braid), banding, hoof preparation and how to properly use tail extensions. This clinic will be facilitated in a revolving "station" type format whereby clinic attendees can drop in a visit at the "learning stations" that involve topics they most want to learn about. Clinic attendees will be up close and personal with horses so please dress appropriately and wear closed toe shoes. Several stations may allow for "hands-on" practice so get ready to learn and have some fun! PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR HORSE TO THE CLINIC - JUST BRING YOURSELVES! |

TACK CARE AND CLEANING CLINIC |
|
Monday, 16 March 2009 |
|
March 22, 2009 - Expo Youth Building – East Hall noon-3pm THIS EVENT HAS PASSED - THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED We had 47 4H members who signed-in for clinic attendance credit and many more family members who came to help! Having before-and-after results made this a very successful clinic based on the clean saddles and tack leaving at the end of the event. We were especially thrilled at the attendance of 4-H members new to equestrian sports. Please watch for more information about the upcoming April 5th Show Prep / Horse Grooming clinic at the Horse Quarters. ___ Presented by Steve Secosh Bring your own tack to clean! Weather permitting, bring saddles. Registration isn't required but encouraged so we know how many supplies are needed. Please email

to reserve a space. The first half of the clinic will be a fun learning session covering equestrian tack and various methods you can follow to get it in "show ready" condition. Methods of proper care, cleaning, and conditioning of leather items will be covered after an introduction to leather and the tanning process is presented. Silver cleaning (and other metals) will also be covered. The second half of the clinic will involve cleaning tack. Please bring any cleaning and tack care products that you use and come willing to share your methods. There are many products and techniques and there isn't just one correct method. 4-Hers should leave this clinic with an understanding of the whys and hows of tack care and basic methods of prolonging the life and visual appeal of your tack. Horseless Horse members are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you are a horseless horse member, we have some donated items for you to practice on. |
